Amplion Alert Patient-Care Communications

Assignments + Escalations

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The system understands patient assignments and the message platform directs specific messages to the right caregiver. Medication needs are sent to RNs and requests for blankets or toileting are sent to aides.

Of course, the initial staff member is not always able to respond, so Amplion’s escalation will find a qualified caregiver who can assist the patient in a timely way.

Finally, since each transaction is recorded in Amplion’s database and nurse call requests use a large number of specific standardized messages, the reporting by the system is unmatched. Request sample reports.

Hospitals need appropriate escalation to protect patients. Clinical staff needs to be aggressive with escalations for ventilators and fall pads, although filtering will still help with those alarms. Pulse oximeters, on the other hand, do not need as aggressive a path.

Amplion’s system also features the alarm notification on a large display monitor in the nurses’ station, so there is visibility and accountability among the clinical team.

The end result of effective filtering and escalation is greater focus on a much smaller number of alarms — exactly what is needed for hospital staff and their patients.

Alarm Management

Before we send any alarm message, we work closely with your clinical staff to decide which messages should be sent and when.

When an alarm message is sent, we send the room number and the alarming event directly to the assigned caregiver.

As a result, when a caregiver receives an alarm message, they know it is their patient and feel reasonably confident it is a real alarm, so they feel the need to respond.

Amplion collected data across thirty 36-hour weeks and we reduced the management of 5,000 alarms to 700, with an average of 167 Bi-PAP alarms every shift. Filtering out alarms that self-canceled within six seconds took that number to 23 alarms per shift.

Connecting the alarms to the right caregivers is critical. These were Bi-PAP alarms, so they required an RN or an RT.

Assuming an average of 11 RN/RTs, this meant each caregiver got about two Bi-PAP alarm messages per shift. So, instead of hearing 167 messages and not knowing if the alarm was real or for their patient, each RN/RT got two messages that they knew were for their patient and that were likely to be important.

This is great information when your duty is to manage alarms.
